Lavalleja department of the saws.

Lavalleja extends along the Big Chopper and his branches splashed with forests, prairies, gullies, creeks, cascaditas, caves and the others. It was always a modality of the ecotourism of the Uruguay. Several natural springs supply to the water country of high quality.

Limits: She is placed to the Southeast of the country. It borders to the north on Thirty three; to the east with Rocha; to the Southeast and south with Maldonado and on the west with Cannelloni and Florida.

Etymological origin: The department receives his name in honor to Brigadier general Juan Antonio Lavalleja, who had out-standing military and political performance in the struggle as the independence of the country, and who was original of the same one.

History: The department was founded on June 16 of 1.837 with part of the territories of Long Hill and Maldonado. He adopted, firstly the name of Mines until in March of 1.888 in the House of Representatives it was requested to change the name to him into that of Lavalleja and to raise to city the condition of the town of Mines.

On December 26, 1927 finally there was replaced the name of the department of Mines with that of Lavalleja, acaeciedo the debates on the point. Political will existed to designate a department of the Uruguay with the name of the chief of the Liberating Crusade, but not at the cost of Mines, going so far as even to call into question the possibility of creating a new department with the name Lavalleja, idea that finally did not prosper.

Orography: It presents a varied relief; high place in the south with saws, hills, extensive vales, and flatness towards the north. It possesses mountains and crags that often are of granite.

The whole department is composed by areas corresponding to the crystalline basement, with breaks and dislocations in several parts what caused small tectonic pits refilled by later areas, like the located ones in the vale of the river Saint Lucia and in the region where basaltic lava has spilled.

In wide areas of the basement there prevail diverse types of granite and quartzites that for his resistance to the meteorización and erosion determine the most broken and rough areas of the department.

The crystalline limestones are abundant also and dolomíticas. There are areas in which the sedimentary accumulation has been important, refilling the low parts to shape very favorable vales for the development of the cattle and of the agriculture, like the Strong vale and the Small vale with soils and grasslands of big nourishing wealth.

Hydrography: It possesses an important and well distributed hydrographic network that can be divided in two basins: that of the river Saint Lucia that waters the whole south region and the head office, and that of the Cebollatí, shut up partially by the Big Chopper, which includes the whole north and central area of the department.

Economy: Three economic areas differ: to the north, almost exclusive mastery of the cattle activity; on the south, area chacrera, of smallholdings and finally an intermediate area where the mining activity and of the mount they make a mistake.

There are extracted building materials and embellishment as the sand, the pedregullo, the called building stone and the clayish slime with which the red ceramics are prepared. Also the marble of type onyx is exploited, of white color with yellowish seams.

They grow up bovine, sheep and an important number of pigs. There is cultivated wheat, corn, beer barley, beet, pope, rice, vine and fruit trees. Some industries as the ride exist to end for the complex Salus, with packed of mineral water of a natural source and from her the production of beer, cider, citrus fruits, tonic water and malts.

Also there is wine production, rice mills, tanneries, extraction of limestones, making of lime and cement - Pórtland.

Important cities: First of all we find Mines that it is the capital, founded about 1783. Then like important localities José Pedro Varela (4.913 inhabitants), José Batlle y Ordoñez (2.251 inhabitants), founded in the year 1883.

The tourist attractions of Lavalleja are: The cave and the hill Arequita, Mountain Town, Park Salus, Hill of the Verdún, Dam of White Waters, Jump of the Penitent and the tourist stays as that of "The White Rock".

Mountain town was constructed about 1940 for urbanistas nationals and foreigners. It is between the hills and the vales of the creeks Penitent and Marmarajá
